Variables

When I type $variable I mean to say that $variable could be anything of a specific type, usually variable.

For example $vegetable could mean any specific vegetable.

The doctor said to eat more $vegetable.

Or

On $weekday, I always get my grocery shopping done.

When I reference a variable like this, it means that it doesn’t matter what the specific case is, but that I’m referencing the concept in general. In the second example above, it doesn’t really matter what day I do my shopping but, you get the sense that I do all my shopping on one specific weekday. You could pick “Tuesday” as the value for that and for the sake of the conversation it wouldn’t matter.
